Abstract

905,215. Thermographic copying materials. KALLE & CO. A.G. July 29, 1959 [Aug. 9, 1958], No. 26042/59. Class 98 (2). Thermographic copying materials consist of a support bearing an adherent coating containing (a) an aminocarboxylic acid, or a salt formed from a primary amine and an organic carboxylic or sulphonic acid, in combination with (b) a' ketohydrindene having 2, 3, or 4 reactive carbonyl groups, e.g. in the ratio of (a): (b) of 5 to 8: 1. The ketohydrindene may be 1: 3-diketohydrindene or its 2-(1<SP>1</SP>-ketohydrindenylidene-3<SP>1</SP>) or 2-(1<SP>1</SP>-keto-2<SP>1</SP>-bromo-hydrindenylidene-3<SP>1</SP>) derivatives, bis-diketohydrindene, or 1 : 2 : 3-triketohydrindene; the aminocarboxylic acid may be #-(3<SP>1</SP>-aminophenyl) propionic acid or 4-aminobenzoic acid; the primary amine may be aniline, benzylamine, 4 : 4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenylmethane, 4-amino-diphenyl, 4-amino- 1-(m)ethoxy-benzene, n-hexylamine, n-octylamine, or 2-aminopyridine; the organic acids may be acetic acid or its chloro, bromo, cyano or phenyl derivatives, bromopropionic acid, cinnamic, malonic or benzoic acids, α-naphthalene sulphonic acid, or 4-toluene sulphonic acid. The coating is prepared by suspending the components (a) and (b) in a solution of a binder, the primary amine and organic acid being, if desired, added separately and not as a salt, applying the coating to the support and drying the coating as with a current of air at a temperature not above 40‹ C. Suitable binders are cyclized rubber, maleic acid-polyalcohol resins, colophony, modified colophony resins, and polymethacrylate esters and the solvents used may be aliphatic hydrocarbons, including mixtures such as petrol and ligroin, or hydrocarbon halides. The supports specified are all transparent and comprise glass, transparent paper, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, and polyvinyl chloride. Copying may be effected by reflex or direct copying with radiant heat or by means of a heated stylus or stamp.
