Abstract

815,005. Photographic diazotype materials. ILFORD Ltd. Nov. 18, 1957 [Sept. 28, 1956; July 3, 1957], Nos. 29673/56 and 21027/57. Class 98(2) A two-component material comprises in order a layer containing a diazo compound, a fusible layer, and a layer containing a coupler, the whole carried on a sheet or film support which latter may be on either side. The material may be made by coating the layers on the support but preferably the layer applied on to the fusible layer, either that containing the diazo compound or the coupler according to the order of coating, is applied by spraying to prevent any tendency to effect fusion and hence premature coupling. In an example a methanol solution of 4-ptolythio - 2 : 5 - diethoxy benzene diazouium zincichloride is coated on to tracing paper by a roller and scraper technique and dried, the second layer is paraffin wax of melting point 60‹C. applied by dip coating from a molten bath thereof, when cold the coupler layer of dimedone and stearylamine in chloroform, is sprayed on, and finally the material is sprayed with an ethyl acetate solution of cellulose acetate to provide a protective coating. A second example specifies similarly 4 - benzoylamino - 2 : 5 - diethoxy benzene diazonium chloride as sensitizer and resorcinol as coupler. Exposure of these materiels to light through a suitable master and heating to about 80-100‹C. produces respectively orange and brown images on clear white backgrounds. Exposure by a mercury vapour lamp may provide sufficient heat in the case where the master carries an image in radiation absorbing material, such as printer's ink, carbon or silver, to ensure dye production in image areas while destroying the diazo compound in non-image areas and thus leave the product stable to subsequently applied heat or light. Exposure by heat or infra-red only may be without effect on the diazo compound of the non-image areas and these may subsequently be destroyed by daylight or ultra-violet radiation, or may be separately coupled to form a background in azo dye of different colour to that of the image areas, or may be used to apply a second image by light exposure and coupling, or a second image by a second heat or infra-red exposure. Diazotized 1 - amino - 2 : 6 - dimethoxy benzene is quoted as a diazo compound of high-heat stability for these purposes. Other substances for the fusible layer are indicated. Specification 759,045 is referred to.
