Abstract

963,981. Heat-sensitive diazo sheet materials. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 5, 1960 [Aug. 7, 1959], No. 27309/60. Heading G2C. A thermographic sheet material comprises on a backing or included or impregnated in a selfsustaining sheet a heat-sensitive combination consisting of an azo coupling component and a solid, light-stable non-hygroscopic triazene non-volatile at temperatures up to 150‹C. of the formula Ar-N=N-N(R)R<SP>1</SP> where Ar is aromatic, R is organic, and R<SP>1</SP> is organic or hydrogen, the coupling component and the triazene being such as to be immediately visibly inter-reactive when 10 mgs of each are mixed together 5 ml of a solution containing 10% of glacial acetic acid in 95% ethanol. Thus the reactants may be impregnated into a paper sheet, mixed into a film-forming binder to form a self supporting sheet, or coated in a binder in a single or separate layers on to a heat-stable sheet e.g. tracing paper or polyethylene terephthalate. Typically, the triazene compounds are ones of the formula above in which Ar is phenyl, dichloro phenyl or carbomethoxyphenyl or p-N-methylacetamidophenyl, R is phenyl and R<SP>1</SP> is methyl or hydrogen; Ar is p diethylaminophenyl, R is p-acetamidophenyl and R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen; or bis-triazene compounds such as 3 : 3<SP>1</SP>-dimethoxy-4 : 4<SP>1</SP>-dipheny lene-bis-(3<SP>11</SP>-methyl-3<SP>11</SP> sodium methylene carboxylate or #-ethylene sulphonate-1<SP>11</SP>-triazene); the couplers are aromatic hydroxy compounds such as phloroglucinol, aromatic amino compounds such as diaminonaphthalene, active methylene compounds, and aryl amides of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid ("Naphtol AS"); and binders are polystyrene, vinyl chloride-acetate copolymers, polyvinyl butyral, and ethyl cellulose. Fillers and pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, may be included in the sheet or in the case of transparent backing sheets an opacifying overcoat may be applied e.g. of zinc oxide in a binder of sytrene-isobutylene copolymer containing a phythlic anhydride.
