Abstract
943,993. Thermographic copying sheets. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 35595/59. Heading G2C. A thermographic copy sheet having improved resistance to discoloration under illumination and to fingerprinting consists of a support and a coating thereon including as image-producing reactants a finely divided particulate silver soap and a reducing agent therefor and homogeneously associated therewith zinc oxide and a solid fusible pure hydrocarbon thermoplastic terpene resin of zero acid number. The zinc oxide and terpene resin particles provide a white opaque ground and on thermographic exposure the silver soap and reducing agent produce a visible image in the heated areas while the resin there fuses to a transparent mass disclosing the image. The quantity of terpene resin is preferably from 2 to 5 times the quantity of the silver soap by weight and forms from 2/5 to 2/3 of the coating by volume. Typically white kraft paper is coated with a ball-milled dispersion in acetone of silver behenate and behenic acid, a powdered terpene resin of zero acid number and a softening poing of 135C., zinc oxide, polyvinyl acetate, and phthalazin-1-one, to which is added just before coating methyl gallate. A thin overcoat of a ball-milled acetone-dispersion of behenic acid, powdered silica, cellulose acetate, phthalazin- 1-one may be applied. Instead of silver behenate, silver salts of stearic, oleic, lauric hydroxystearic, acetic, phthalic, terephthalic, butyric, m-nitrobenzoic, salicylic, phenylacetic, pyromellitic, #-phenylbenzoic, undecylenic, camphoric, furoic, acetamidobenzoic or o-aminobenzoic acids may be used together with the free acids where appropriate or another waxy acid if the other components are not waxy. If the silver soap is waxy the free acid may be omitted. The methyl gallate reactant may be replaced by protocatechnic acid or hydroquinone while the phthalazinone may be replaced by phthalic anhydride. Polyvinyl butyral and cellulose acetate butyrate may be used as binders in place of polyvinyl acetate.
