Abstract

953,150. Thermochromic layers. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 4,1962 [Oct. 5, 1961], No.21450/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading G2C. A copy sheet consists of a web having a heatsensitive coating containing a thermochromic 1, 3, 3-trimethyl-indolinobenzospiropyran of formula containing a substituent capable of chelation in the 8<SP>1</SP> position and a chelatable metallic salt of an organic acid, so that on melting of either component a coloured reaction product is given; specified salts are the zinc, manganese, magnesium, aluminium, lead, copper or cobalt salts of acetic, oleic stearic naphthenic, ricinoleates or resenic acid. Specified spiro pyrams are 4, 7, 8<SP>1</SP> trimethoxy; 6<SP>1</SP> -methoxy, 8<SP>1</SP> nitro;8<SP>1</SP> methoxy;61 nitro-8<SP>1</SP>methoxy; 8<SP>1</SP>-ethoxy; 5-chloro, 8<SP>1</SP> -methoxy; 1-phenyl, 8<SP>1</SP>- methoxy; 1-amyl,8<SP>1</SP> methoxy and 5-chloro, 8<SP>1</SP>- ethoxy. In the example, calcium resinate, cobalt naphthenate, and a surface-active agent are dispersed in a binder and then mixed with the 4, 7, 8<SP>1</SP>-trimethoxy-spiropyran in a binder and coated on a support. This sheet is exposed image-wise to infra-red causing the spiro-pyran to melt and the colour thus produced is stabilized by chelation with the metal salts.
