Abstract

904,827. Two-part couplings. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 15, 1959 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 41035/58. Class 38 (1). In a two-part coupling comprising a plug member 1 and socket member 3 for interconnecting a coaxial cable 15 and a lead 45 the plug member has an expandable internally-tapered sleeve 2, with a flange 10, slidably mounted on a tapered brass central contact pin 5 having flanges 11 keying it to a polythene insulator 12 surrounded by a sleeve 26 threaded at 28, one braided lead 14 of a coaxial cable 15 being soldered to the end flange and the sleeve 2 being received by a sleeve 4 of the socket member connected by pigtails 44 to the lead 45 and keyed to an insulator 39 surrounded by a sleeve 33 left-hand threaded at 32. A running nut 30 couples members 1 and 3; as the nut is tightened the expandable sleeve 2 moves into the sleeve 4 until the flange 10 abuts the rim of sleeve 4. Further tightening forces the tapered pin 5 forward, thus expanding the sleeve 2 and driving it against the inside of the sleeve 4 with a high surface pressure. The braided outer lead 17 of the cable 15 is soldered to a brass collar 22 which is keyed to the insulator 12 and which has finger extensions 23 gripping the cable 15 under the action of a binding strip 24. A separate lead (not shown) can be attached to flange 46 of sleeve 33.
