Abstract

904,598. Casting-machines. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO. April 16, 1959 [Oct. 22, 1958], No. 13039/59. Class 83 (1). A die-casting machine comprises a source of supply of molten material 102 subject to atmospheric pressure and situated at a lower level than the charging chamber 22, and means for producing a vacuum in the charging chamber to cause a molten material charge to be drawn into it from the supply source through an orifice 168 remote from the chamber. The machine is similar to that described in Specification 868,732, having a hood 68 surrounding the dies 12, 28 and connected to a vacuum pipe 88. The metal supply reservoir 102 is heated by a gas burner 106 and the inlet pipe 94 by elements 108. Heat-transfer waterpassages 110 are provided in the charging chamber walls. To prevent air entering the hood 68 via the sides of the injection plunger 92, a vacuum seal 112 is provided. The seal is connected to the vacuum source by a valve 127 operated in synchronism with the ram. The seal includes an annular member 162 having a sharp edge to clean the ram 92 as it is retracted. The charge in the chamber 22 is determined by the size of the orifice 168 at the supply end of the pipe 94 and the time for which the plunger 92 is retracted.
