Abstract
904,367. Glow discharge lamps. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958], No. 39954/58. Class 39 (1). A cold cathode character display tube for A.C. or D.C. operation comprises a metal electrode 5 forming part of a box open on one side facing a viewing window of the glass envelope, a set of electrodes 1, each shaped in the form of a character to be displayed, mounted within the box, and an additional electrode 11 mounted outside the box but adjacent an aperture 9 therein. Electrode 11 is connected to electrode 5 through a current-limiting resistor so that during each half-cycle of an alternating power supply connected between an electrode 1 and electrode 11, a discharge is initiated between the electrode 1 and electrode 5 and transfers to electrode 11. As shown, electrode 11 is arranged behind electrode 5 out of sight of electrodes 1, a shield 10 is provided and the side walls of the envelope are coated with paint or metal so that the glow at electrode 11 is not visible through the viewing window. The electrodes 1 are supported by mica sidewalls 3 of the box containing them. The tube contains 99% neon and 1% argon. According to the Provisional Specification, two boxes each containing a set of electrodes may be provided so that two characters may be displayed simultaneously, and the electrodes 1 may be constructed of twin Ni wires or by blanking from a suitable mesh.
