Abstract

893,553. Glow discharge lamps. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 21, 1958, No. 26872/58. Class 39(1) A cold-cathode numeral display tube comprises nine electrodes, each shaped as one of the arabic numerals 0 1 . . . 9 excluding 8 and connected to a separate pin of a 9-pin base. Electrodes 3 and 6 may function as cathodes at the same time and are so shaped and arranged that the two cathode glows together appear as numeral 8. The operating circuit is such that either of at least two electrodes may be connected to a positive potential while any one of the electrodes, or both electrodes 3 and 6 are connected as cathode to establish a glow discharge. As shown, the electrodes are supported between mica discs 21, 22. The electrodes are preferably connected to the negative potential through resistors, the valves of which are selected to equalize the current densities carried by the electrodes. The tube may contain a mixture of neon and 1% argon at a pressure of 30 mms. of Hg.
