In a gas filled glow discharge indicator tube of the kind having a plurality of display electrodes of different symbolic shapes, the electrodes being connected to separate terminals, there are provided two interleaved sets of electrodes; the electrodes of one set are substantially identical with those of the other set and they are arranged with like electrodes of the two sets adjacent to one another, the electrodes of one set alternating with those of the other set. In operation of the device one electrode of a like pair acts as an anode the other as a cathode. The electrodes not required for display purposes are connected to the electrode of the anode set. Each of two sets of electrodes may act as cathode or anodes and the connections are interchangeable. In one form twenty electrodes in two sets of ten, the electrodes being in the form of numerals, are mounted between posts 23 and 24 spaced from each and supported in planes parallel to the base 21, the electrodes of one set such as A7 being interleaved with the electrodes of the other set such as C7 such that like electrodes of the two sets are adjacent each other. Adjacent pairs of electrodes need not be in numerical order and will be arranged to minimise masking of adjacent numerals. Each electrode is connected to a terminal pin such as CP1 or API projecting through the base 21. In another embodiment the electrode planes are perpendicular to the base.
