[Also in Group XXXI] In a mechanically driven cultivating machine, of the kind which is supported and guided by a person walking behind the machine, the guiding handle 6 and driving motor 5 are mounted upon a common support 7 which can be rotated bodily to reverse the direction of travel of the machine and to have the implement in front of or behind the machine without interfering with its mounting upon the machine. The supporting platform 7 may be rotated about a vertical pivot 8 and secured to one or other of the lugs 14 which limit its movement in each direction. The wheels and implement are driven through gearing contained within the body 2 from a transverse drive shaft 12 having a pair of stepped pulleys 10 mounted one on each side of the machine, either of which may be connected, as appropriate, with a stepped driving pulley 9 of the motor, the stepped pulleys allowing for two driving speeds. Alternatively, the motor may be provided with two stepped driving pulleys, one on each side, either of which may be connected, as appropriate, with a single driven stepped pulley 10. The belt is normally loose and may be clutched into driving engagement by the pressure of a loose pulley 16 mounted upon a bell crank 17. The implement may be a rotary hoe having reversible or double edged blades which will act in either direction of rotation.
