767,036. Agricultural implements. ROTARY HOES, Ltd. May 2, 1955 [May 10, 1954], No. 13517/54. Class 6(1). [Also in Group XXXI] A power-operated cultivator comprising a longitudinal shaft 41 connected by worm gearing 52 to the centre of a transverse rotor shaft 58 on which are mounted L-shaped cultivating tools 69 each having one arm extending radially and the other arm extending horizontally towards the opposite side of the machine, is provided with a housing 13 for the shaft 41 which is formed from solid material and has a rectangular cross-section the vertical dimension of which is proportionally larger than the horizontal dimension so that the width of the uncultivated ground between the tips of the two sets of tools can be kept to a minimum. As shown the housing 13 is detachably secured to a casing 12 so that the tools may be removed, the shaft 41 fitting into a splined sleeve 40 mounted on a shaft 31 which drives the landwheels 15 by worm gearing and is connected to a motor 18 by a belt drive 28. The motor is mounted so that it may be tilted by means of a lever 26 operated by a rod 25 to control the tension in the belt drive 28 so as to act as a clutch for the drive to the power shaft 41. The bearings of the transverse shaft 58 are formed by a casing 45 and a removable cover for the casing (not shown). The rotor is provided with a curved guard plate 77 with a depending rear portion 78 and a depth control mechanism 79. In a modification the rotor shaft is formed in two parts which decline in the laterally outward direction and are connected by a universal joint so that the tools may work the ground beneath the casing 13.
