Loops are formed by the needles on a loopforming point or edge a of the sinkers which lies radially outwardly of the knocking-over throat e, so that when the needles, during loop forming, have reached their lowest position, the sinkers will act on the loops of the preceding course, with or without acting also on the course of loops last formed, in order to displace the loops which have been cast off the needles out of the region of and behind the needles, whereupon the sinkers effect an elastic equalization and distribution to equal size of the loops in the said preceding course by exerting elastic radially inward pressure on these loops. Each sinker bears a hook h, directed upwardly and forwardly to overlie the normal loop-forming edge and having a rear edge which is curved or slopes downwardly to the point or edge a which is at a distance from the throat e smaller than the greatest cross-sectional dimension of the needles through the hook and latch when the latch is closed on the hook and which lies at the same level as, or at a level only a little higher or lower than the level of-the normal loop-forming edge in front of the hook; and the sinkers are pressed by a tension spring F, surrounding their circle, between the needles against the loops of the preceding course. The sinkers may be provided also with a projection f, the forward edge of which may, as at b, be close enough to the hook h to act simultaneously on the last formed loop or, may be positioned as at c, so that it does not do so. The sinkers are advanced for knocking-over by cam S<SP>1</SP>, are held in that position by the spring F, are temporarily withdrawn by cam S<SP>2</SP> in correspondence with additional thread demand as the needles rise and are then returned by the spring F. The cam S<SP>1</SP> may be rendered inoperative during oscillation of the machine.
