Abstract

896,474. Centrifugal pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 27, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 25662/59. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] A pump has a pump casing 40, 42, a non- magnetic diaphragm 44 co-operating to form a pump chamber 46 with inlets 56 and an outlet passage 50 in the casing and a rotary impeller 58 mounted on a pivot pin 64 fixed to the wall 42 of the casing and driven by a drive mechanism through a magnetic coupling 82, 78. The pump is suspended. from the top of a fuel tank 14 inside a sealed drive casing 10 and has its intake and a filter 102 immediately above the tank bottom. The pump impeller 58 comprises an aluminium vane plate 60 carrying a permanent magnet 78. The pivot pin 64 abuts the diaphragm 44 and has rotatably mounted thereon a hardened graphite or like low-friction material bush 66 with a smooth upper surface. The impeller vane plate 60 is swaged to the bush. An inverted cup 26 above the diaphragm encloses a drive-plate 80 carrying a permanent magnet 82. The hub 86 of the drive plate is recessed to receive a steel ball 92 between hardened steel plates 90, 94 and a hardened steel ring 88. The magnets are of annular form with sections of alternating polarity arranged about the ring axis and rotate together without slip. When stationary magnetic attraction will lift the impeller so that the bush 66 is in contact with the diaphragm 44 and the fall in pressure on the underside of the impeller when pumping causes it to drop until the bush 66 bears on the plate 42.
