Abstract
1383811 Heart pumps BIO-MEDICUS INC 3 Jan 1972 81/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division F1] A centrifugal pump 150 for blood or other delicate liquids or gases which may contain solids in suspension comprises at least two frusto-conical vaneless impellers 168..171 arranged to cause, on rotation in a housing 151, 157, substantially non-turbulent flow in fluid between them. The impellers 168..171 converge one towards another outwardly so that the fluid flow rate is substantially constant at all radii. The impellers are electrically driven by an A.C. or D.C. motor 175, 180 having winding switch gear in a chamber 179. The motor rotor may be formed by the impellers which are permanently magnetised or carry magnets, the stator windings (54), Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), being located in the housing around the impellers. The windings may be sealed against fluid contact by a layer of plastics material. The rotor windings may be associated with the impellers and the magnets with the housing. The impellers may be straight, Fig. 5 (not shown), or have a double curvature between their inner edges and outer .peripheries, Fig. 6 (not shown). The housing may be rigid or at least in part elastic and the specification includes a list of possible pump construction materials.
