Abstract

1426006 Aerating liquids blood oxygenator TECNA CORP 18 Sept 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 43795/73 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division A5] A blood oxygenator comprises a stator 4 having a rotor 16 mounted on a shaft 17 and spaced in a disc-like cavity within the stator, first gas-permeable support wafers 28, 29 disposed on upper and lower walls 9, 11 of said cavity, further similar wafers 31, 32 disposed on walls 26, 27 of the rotor, membranes 33, 34, 36, 37, permeable to gas but not readily to liquid, respectively in contact with said wafers 28, 29, 31, 32 a passage 56-58 extending from adjacent the centre of said cavity to the periphery thereof, an inlet 41 in the stator connecting with a duct 42, said gas passing through the wafers 28, 29 and out of said stator through a passage 44, a duct 46 through which gas is led into said rotor, through the wafers 31, 32 and out of said rotor through a lower chamber 53, a passage 63 for conducting blood into said cavity and into that passage 58 adjacent the centre of said rotor, and a discharge opening 67 in a peripheral wall 12 of said cavity for conducting blood out of said cavity. Superficial irregularities, not shown, on said membranes impart a centrifugal force to the blood in the passages 56 and 57 and so induce it to flow through the entrance passage 63, through the passages 56, 57 in a genarally radial path and out at the opening 67 without the need for an exterior circulating pump. In order to augment the blood flow, a membrane (68) Fig. 3, (not shown), similar to the aforementioned membranes, with an integrally formed upstanding radial vane (69) projecting into the adjacent passage 56 or 57, is provided. The rotor is connected to a motor for turning said rotor on bearings 19, 21 about a central axis 22. In an alternative embodiment, the said wafers are formed of mounds or ridges integral with the material of the rotor or stator.
