Abstract

A hydro dynamic brake system has a split housing (12, 14) which forms a ring chamber for the rotor and stator elements (24, 30). The rotor is attached to the central shaft (16) whilst the stator is fixed to the housing flange (12). The brake fluid enters the housing through port (48) from where it flows through inclined stator holes to meet the rotor blades which rotate in the opposite direction. A calibrated radial gap (37) between the rotor and stator control the flow through the system and thus the internal fluid pressure which determines the brake capacity of the unit.
