Abstract
1373039 Centrifugal pumps WORTHINGTON CORP 26 April 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 19282/72 Heading F1C A centrifugal pump comprises a volute casing of reinforced concrete or the like having a suction inlet open at the upper end thereof, and an impeller having an upwardly facing impeller in communication with the suction inlet whereby a free-standing volume of liquid to be pumped can enter the impeller at the top side thereof by gravity flow. As shown, the pump receives the liquid from a resevoir 11 which may also be of reinforced concrete or the like and integral with the volute casing 20. To reduce friction, the volute casing may have an inner coating 23 or a filled fluorocarbon resin, a silicone compound or other non-wetting or non-sticking material. The lower bearing 32 and the lower wear ring support 37 are carried by a mounting plate 36, while the upper bearing 33 is carried via spider arms 44a by a mounting frame 45 which also carries the upper wear ring 52. The support for the driving motor 42 includes circumferentially spaced bars 62 which form a trash filter and may be shaped to act as inlet vanes. Such vanes may be movable in unison by means of a manual or automatic control.
