Abstract
896,352. Pipe joints. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 18, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24620/59. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XVIII] One member of a metal to metal joint is rendered plastic in the region of the joint under a -load applied by a clamping device, without exceeding the elastic limit of the clamping device, the joint being confined to avoid substantial deformation in the plastic state. A zirconium pipe 1 abuts a mild steel pipe 3 at an annular face 5 and seals by plastic deformation at the joint face, small radial clearances at 12 and 13 being provided to take up differential thermal expansion. A stainless steel ring 7 distributes the clamping load. Bolt heads 9 in an annular recess 10 are covered by a welded ring plate 11. The joint may be used in joining a pipe to a vessel or sealing a plate over a port.
