Abstract
893,184. Moderator structures. SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 31, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 19219/60. Class 39(4) The fuel rods of a nuclear reactor are surrounded by and spaced from a heat-insulating jacket formed of a finely divided, non- crystalline carbon. The carbon may be prepared either by milling coke or derived from natural gas or petroleum distillates. In a water moderated reactor, cooled by liquid sodium, the wall of the jacket adjoining the cool moderator is pressure resistant and the inner wall is thin. A leak occurring in the inner wall will admit liquid metal to the jacket which will tend to coagulate with the carbon to seal the break. Specification 807,221 and Swiss Specification 286,658 are referred to.
