Abstract

A sintered metal graphite compact containing 11% to 25% graphite is formed by first compacting colloidal graphite and then crushing to form granules preferably 200 to 500 micron size, mixing the granules with a metal powder and then hot pressing. The metals comprise one or more of copper, iron and aluminium and optionally up to 15% of zinc, cadmium, lead or tin and up to 9% of antimony, cobalt, beryllium or manganese. The graphite, preferably less than 1 micron in size is compacted at 2000 atmospheres and then crushed to agglomerates of 200-500 micron size. After mixing, the metal graphite mixture is cold pressed at a pressure of at least 2000 atmospheres, sintered at a low temperature below the entectic and finally hot pressed at 1500-4000 atmospheres.
