Abstract

A method of making alloy extruded forms comprises mixing atomized magnesium-maganese alloy containing from 0.1 per cent -2.5 per cent manganese with at least one comminuted magnesium-soluble metal, including aluminium, and extruding the mixed powder in heated condition. The magnesium-soluble metal preferably includes at least 3 per cent aluminium and about 1 per cent - 3 per cent of at least one of the metals cadmium, lead, manganese, silver, tin, zinc. In one example 97 parts by weight of magnesium base alloy containing 1.08 per cent manganese powdered by atomization are mixed with 3 parts of mechanically powdered aluminium and the mixture extruded in heated condition. In another example the magnesium-manganese alloy contains 1.71 per cent manganese and is mixed with an equal part by weight of a magnesium-aluminium alloy containing 6 per cent aluminium. Alternatively 98 parts by weight of magnesium-manganese alloy containing 1.6 per cent manganese is mixed with one part of powdered aluminium and one part powdered cadmium. Lead, silver, tin, zinc and manganese may be included instead of or in addition to cadmium.
