Abstract
689,349. Powder metallurgy; making powdered metal. HOGANAS-BILLESHOLMS AKTIEBOLAG. Feb. 9, 1951, No. 3208/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). In a method of making metal powders for sintering, metal is first ground to a grain size smaller than that normally suitable for use and is then agglomerated and ground or crushed to a larger grain size suitable for use in sintering moulds. Powder of a grain size below 0.5 mm. is agglomerated by sintering or by using binders such as cellulose lacquers and the mass ground or crumbled by cautious pressing through a screen to a grain size not exceeding 0.15 mm. The powders may be of alloys or a mixture of different metals or may have electrolytically or chemically applied coatings of metals for forming alloys on sintering. The binder may be shellac, colophony, phenolic resins, paraffin wax or substances such as zinc stearate or stearic acid which act as lubricants during the pressing operation and which may be mixed with the other binders. The binders are used in organic solvents such as alcohol, ether or benzol which is evaporated to leave the binder in the powder.
