Abstract
A nuclear fuel material comprises a dispersion of uranium nitride particles in a matrix of sintered aluminium nitride, the uranium nitride content being between 10 and 50 vol. %. The uranium nitride may be in the form of spherical particles which are mixed with aluminium nitride powder and the mixture hot pressed in a die at 1620 DEG C., under a pressure of 2850 tons 1 sq. in. The pressing is carried out in a protective atmosphere such as argon and pressure is maintained for 1/2 hr. after the pressing temperature has been reached. It is advantageous to cold compact the mixture in the die prior to the commencement of heating.
