Abstract
Sintered aluminium compacts are formed by cold or hot pressing and then hot deforming flaky aluminium powder with a mean grain size of 10 micron to 200 micron, an oxide content of 2% to 13%, a surface area of 2 to 12 sq. metres per gram, and a recrystallisation ratio of between 1,1 and 1,7 to 1. The recrystallisation ratio is the ratio between the size of the exposed areas of the crystals of the powder at 400 DEG C. and that of the exposed areas of the crystals prior to heating. The powder may also contain up to 35% of silicon, oxides, aluminides, carbides and silicides and up to 60% of atomised aluminium powder. The ratio of the total oxide content of the aluminium powder to the surface area of the powder should not exceed 5. The flake aluminium powder is produced by shredding aluminium foil and then dry grinding. In the examples aluminium flake is mixed with silicon powder in the ratio of 3 to 1 and 6 to 1, cold pressed at 2,2 ton per sq. cm., heated to 440 DEG C. and finally extruded into rods.
