Abstract

Magnesium or magnesium based alloy particles are heated in an atmosphere containing at least 5% by volume of CO2 to form a magnesium oxide film on the particles. The magnesium powder has a particle size range of 1-2000 microns and the heating is preferably effected in dry 90-100% CO2 at 250-600 DEG C., to form an oxide layer 0.01-10 microns thick which constitutes 0.1-20% by weight of the powder. The heat treatment may be carried out before, during or after compaction of the magnesium powder and the compacted composite body formed may be plastically deformed, e.g. by rolling or drawing in an atmosphere of CO2. In an example a magnesium alloy containing 0.4% Zr is oxidized in CO2 at 400 DEG C., cold compacted at 40 Kg./mm.2 and then heated to 525 DEG C. under CO2 and extruded.
