Abstract

A wear-resistant element comprises a wear-resistant composition flame-sprayed on to a substrate e.g. stainless steel, which substrate may carry an undercoat e.g. nickel chromium, said composition being such that it contains at least 65% by weight of nickel oxide and/or cobalt oxide mixed with an additive consisting of either one or more fluorides, phosphates or borates of magnesium, calcium, barium or strontium, and/or lead monoxide. The proportion of the additive aforesaid may be 5 to 35% by weight; and when the element is used in an oxidizing atmosphere, a proportion of the nickel oxide or cobalt oxide may be replaced by nickel or cobalt metal that is intended to slowly oxidize in use, at least 30% of the surface area being constituted by the said oxide. The composition may also contain an oxide of aluminum, magnesium of zinc, a dioxide of tin or titanium, or a mixture thereof, which is capable of forming a eutectic mixture with the nickel and/or cobalt oxide to facilitate flame spraying. Examples of the composition and preparation thereof for flame spraying are described; and for details of these examples the specification should be referred to. In one of these examples, the composition is first milled and then extruded together with a binding material to form rods that are subsequently sintered before flame spraying is carried out, the binding material being decomposed during the sintering operation. In other examples the dry composition is either sprayed immediately or first sintered in blocks that are crushed and sieved before the spraying operation is performed.
