Abstract

During the sintering of powdered Cu alloy on to a steel backing a halogen-containing gas or vapour is maintained in intimate contact with the metal being sintered. The vapour may be produced during sintering from a volatile halogen-containing material, e.g. NH4 Cl, previously mixed with the metal powder to the extent of about 1 per cent; or the metal may be sintered in an atmosphere which includes halogen or a volatilized halogen compound In either case a conventional reducing atmosphere e.g. 20 per cent H, 80 per cent N may be present. Alloys of Cu with Pb and/or Sn are specifically referred to.
