Abstract

A uranium-tungsten alloy, for shielding against radiation, is formed by compressing tungsten powder and impregnating with molten uranium or a uranium alloy containing at least 90% of uranium. The tungsten may be compressed and, if desired, sintered e.g. at 1000 DEG C. before being contacted with molten uranium or a mixture of tungsten and uranium alloy powder may be compressed and heated above the melting point of the alloy. Impregnation is performed in vacuum or in a rare gas atmosphere. The production of the following alloys is described (1) W 60%, U 40%; (2) W 90%, U 10%; (3) W 80%, U 18%, Al 2%.
