Abstract

A magnesium base powder is treated in a fluorine containing atmosphere at 0-600 DEG C. to form a coating of magnesium fluoride the fluorine content of the powder being 0.1-15% by weight. The magnesium base powder may be compacted before, during or after the treatment with the fluorine atmosphere which may be fluorine or hydrogen fluoride with or without argon as a diluent. The powder may have a grain size of 1-2000 microns and it may be treated in a fixed furnace or a rotary furnace containing steel balls coated with magnesium. The treatment time varies from 2 to 5 hours. The compacted powder may also be treated with the fluorine atmosphere or the treatment may be carried out during rolling or drawing of the compacted powder.
