Abstract

A sintered powdered metal friction element comprises a heat conductive metallic matrix of iron or copper with additions of tin, and a dispersion of 5-50% by weight of highly angular particles of sillimanite Al2 SiO5. Up to 10% by weight of graphite or lead is added as a friction modifier, the mixed powders being preferably cold pressed and sintered under light pressure or hot pressed. Iron based compositions are sintered at 1800 DEG F.-2000 DEG F. and copper base compositions at 1500 DEG -1700 DEG F., a pressure of about 150 p.s.i. being maintained during the sintering operation.ALSO:A sintered powdered metal friction element comprises a heat conductive metallic matrix of iron or copper with additions of tin, and a dispersion of 5-50% by weight of highly angular particles of sillimanite Al2SiO5.
