[Also in Group XXVIII] An oil groove 9 in the piston 1 of a reciprocating motor driven refrigerant compressor serves to vent to atmosphere pressure generated by vaporization of refrigerant in the cylinder space 7 whilst the piston is at rest below its top dead-centre position, and thus reduces the starting torque of the motor. The groove extends from the piston-head to a point 10 just short of the cylinder end 11 when the piston is at its top dead centre position.
