Abstract
934,357. Free piston compressors. H. JANICKE, June 20, 1960 [July 1, 1959], No. 21627/60. Class 7(2). In a free piston compressor in which the gas to be compressed is admitted under pressure into the compressor cylinders 37 and in which the energy required to effect compression in the engine cylinders is derived from outwardly disposed compression chambers, the rear surface of each of the compressor pistons 24 is suitably dimensioned so that these pistons perform work during the inward stroke and absorb energy during the outward stroke the ratio between the front and rear surface areas of the pistons being selected in such a manner that an approximately constant compression ratio is obtained in the engine cylinders. As shown the compressor inlet pressure acts in spaces 38 at the rear of the compressor pistons. In a modification the delivery line pressure of the compressor acts in these spaces. In another modification the compressor pistons are double-acting and the gas supply to both sides of the compressor pistons comes from a common inlet conduit. In this modification the compressor is designed for operation with a high admission pressure and a relatively high compression ratio. The invention is applicable to multi-stage compressors.
