In a vacuum pump unit as described in Specification 841,275, the piston rod is a sliding fit in the pump housing and has a longitudinal air bleed groove 124, Fig. 2 (not shown), which admits air to the pumping chamber when the piston is in the retracted position, closes during movement of the piston and thereby causes the air pressure to increase in the chamber which assists subsequent retraction of the piston upon increase in the manifold vacuum.
