Abstract

1,029,659. Reciprocating pumps and motors. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5862/62. Heading F1A. In a pump or motor in which the capacity may be varied by selectively locking one of two concentric pistons while the other continues to reciprocate, the said one piston is held stationary by hydraulic pressure. The capacity may be selected by the output pressure of the pump or by varying the system base pressure. As shown in Fig. 2 control pressure fed to a chamber 42 causes a sleeve 35 to move down against the action of a spring 36 so that when the pistons 17, 27 reach the t.d.c. the sleeve portion 39 enters a central bore in the piston 27 so that its top face is cut off from the pressure chamber, the pressure in which holds the piston 27 against the plate 40. Reduction of pressure in the chamber 42 permits the sleeve 35 to rise so that the pistons again reciprocate together. In a modification, Fig. 4, the outer piston 60 is reciprocated and the head of the central piston 62 is cut off from the pressure chamber when an external sleeve 66 is moved down by central pressure and is held stationary by the pressure in the pressure chamber.
