Abstract
890,087. Heat exchange between liquids and gases by direct contact; film heat exchangers for cooling combustion gases. THERMAL RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Feb. 11,1960 [Feb. 12, 1959], No. 4820/60. Classes 64(1) and 64(3) To obtain cooled combustion gases or heated liquid, such as water, the products of combustion from a burner 13, which may employ gas and liquid fuel in combination, pass down a tube 14 (in which the combustion may be completed and over the outside of which liquid flows from a chamber 19 through openings 21) into liquid in a basin 17. The gases then pass up through a spray of liquid from nozzles 22 in a chamber 11 around the tube 14, for further cooling, and finally pass through a moisture separator 24 from which the liquid returns through a pipe 26. When the liquid is to be heated, it is sprayed through the nozzles 22 or supplied through the chamber 19 or both. For continuous passage of liquid, there may be an outlet next to the basin 17 or, as shown, a gas trap 31 with an outlet 29 for the liquid. Specifications 737,426 and 779,061 are referred to.
