Abstract

An aqueous solution for chemically polishing and descaling metal surfaces (particularly stainless steel) comprises, by weight, 1-10% of hydrochloric acid, 1-8% of nitric acid and 0/m11-20% of a non-ionic surface-active agent having a polyalkylene oxide chain in the molecule. The solution may also contain up to 60% of phosphoric acid. The surface-active agent may be the condensation product of (1) 1 mole of phenol with 5-30 moles of ethylene oxide, (2) 1 mole of a C1-15-alkyl phenol with 5-30 moles of ethylene oxide, (3) 1 mole of a C10-20-alkyl amine with 5-50 moles of ethylene oxide, (4) 1 mole of a C10-20 aliphatic alcohol with 5-50 moles of ethylene oxide, or (5) 1 mole of a polypropylene glycol containing 10-50 propylene oxide units with 4-160 moles of ethylene oxide. Suitable concentrates, to which are added nitric acid and water to p make working solutions, comprise 6-9% of hydrochloric acid, 2-3% of surface-active agent, optionally 25-65% of phosphoric acid, and the remainder water.ALSO:An aqueous solution for chemically polishing and descaling metal surfaces (particularly stainless steel) comprises, by weight, 1-10% of hydrochloric acid, 1-8% of nitric acid and 0,1-20% of a non-ionic surface-active agent having a polyalkylene oxide chain in the molecule.
