Abstract

1,157,038. Cleaning copper surfaces. LANCY LABORATORIES Inc. Oct. 30, 1967 [Sept. 19, 1967], No.49184/67. Addition to 1,119,969. Headings C7E and C7U. A copper-containing workpiece (including copper plated or alloy e.g. Cu-Al surfaced workpiece) is cleaned by introducing it into an aqueous pickling solution, e.g. at 80-150‹F., containing an inorganic acid selected from H 2 SO 4 , sulphamic acid or an acid salt thereof e.g. NaHSO 4 , in a concentration of 1À84-55% by weight (1-40% by volume), to dissolve cupric oxide from the workpiece surface, 0À1 - 50 g/l of H 2 O 2 to aid in removing and to prevent formation of additional cuprous oxide, and at least 1 g/l (e.g. 1-150 g/l) of a dissolved organic stabilizing compound for the H 2 O 2 containing at least two functional groups carrying polar H atoms that are sterically unhindered by one another or other groups, e.g. (poly) ethylene or propylene glycol, glycollic acid or glycerin. The solution may also contain 0À1-6 oz/gal of a chelating agent, e.g. E.D.T.A. An oxygen-containing gas such as air may be bubbled through the solution during cleaning. The workpiece may be initially treated in a solution containing inorganic acid only to remove most of the oxide prior to the above cleaning. Comparison solutions containing benzoic or propionic acid as stabilizers are disclosed.
