Abstract

Especially oils containing additives, involves drying them and treating with concentrated sulphuric acid and an amino-alcohol. The acid decolourises the oil and the alcohol causes flocculation of the acid tars. A non-ionic wetting agent is also added to improve the action of the acid on the oil. Preferred quantities and compounds are between 0.005-0.2% by weight of ethanolamine (based on the weight of acid) as the amino alcohol, and 0.01-0.5% by weight of wetting agent, particularly the condensation product of ethylene oxide on octyl or nonyl phenol.
