Abstract
889,394. Holding and picking-up tools. HOOK, T. A. Oct. 4, 1960 [Oct. 12, 1959], No. 34442/59. Class 61. A device for handling kerb stones and other articles of specified size comprises a beam structure a, article gripping clamps d pivoted on the ends of the beam remote to each other, handles f pivoted at each end of the beam adjacent the pivots of the clamps and links n connecting the handles to the clamps to transmit motion from the handles against the article being handled. The beam a is of channel section with spacers a<SP>1</SP> on its underside and a pair of flat plates b welded at each end. Each pair of plates supports a stationary pivot c for a normally vertical clamping plate d and a stationary pivot pin e for one end of a normally horizontal handle f. Each clamping plate d has an inwardly projecting arm h having a hole i for the pivot c and a hole k for the pivot o of the link n, the other end of the link n being connected to a handle f by a pivot pin p passed through a hole in the handle. The pivot pins p are readily removable to allow the clamping plates and handles to be turned inwardly on the pivots to facilitate transport. Each pair of plates d is provided with a bail handle q hinged on the pivot pin e, to enable men holding the handles f to turn the kerb stone z. In a modification spade-like gripping clamps are provided to allow their insertion into cracks.
