Abstract

[Also in Group XXX] A device for raising part of a stack of sheets to obtain access to sheets in the middle of the stack comprises a frame 6 adapted to swing about a horizontal axis 5 and provided with jaws 9, which are movable towards one another, a plate 23, and members 22 which connect the plate to one of the jaws. In operation, with frame 6 in a vertical position, the lower jaw 9 is located beneath a pallet 29 supporting the stack, next the jaws are moved simultaneously towards one another to raise and clamp the stack as shown in Fig. 5. Then the platform is moved into a horizontal position in which plate 23 is inserted adjacent the sheets to be removed and is coupled to the right hand jaw by members 22. The frame is then returned to a vertical position whereafter the jaws are separated to deposit the pallet, together with the lower portion of the stack, on the ground with the upper portion of the stack hanging from the upper jaw. Pins 24, 26 are provided to lock the frame in both the horizontal and vertical positions. Jaws 9 are carried by wheeled carriages 10 movable along guides 11 by a pair of screws 13 which have opposite hand threaded portions at each end, and are driven synchronously by worm gearing 19, 20 and chain gearing 16, 17, 18. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the jaws are movable hydraulically and the frame is rotated by power means. In a further modification (not shown), the frame is mounted in a vertical position on a wall and only the lower jaw 9 is movable, the stack being loaded into and removed from the device by a fork lift truck.
