A load 18 (Fig. 4) to be removed from a pallet 15 is supported by the tops of pillars 11 which project through the pallet and through a surface 12 supporting it. The surface 12 may be fixed and the pillars 11 mounted on a moving member 10, or the member 10 and the pillars may be fixed, and the surface 12 supporting the pallet 15 may be lowered over the pillars 11. The load may be removed from the pillars 11 by the tines 19 of a fork truck. Alternatively, retractable tines 68 (Fig. 17) may support the load while the pillars 63 are lowered to permit the pallet to be carried away on rollers 54 forming the supporting surface, and replaced by a further pallet 60 from a supply conveyer 56. The motions of the pillars 11 and supporting surface 12 (Fig. 4) can be guided relatively to one another by members 13, 14 and the motion may be effected by an arrangement of cams (not shown) or by rack and pinion mechanism 67 (Fig. 17). The pallets may be pushed into and from position over the pillars by lugs 37 (Fig. 13) on conveyers 15 mounted on either side of the supporting surface 12 for the pallets and may be supported by rollers 35. The supporting pillars may be of the section shown at 63 in Fig. 17 or may be square or circular in section. Fences at the side edges of the supporting surface 12 may guide the pallets. Magazines may be provided for holding pallets 60 to replace the pallets 58 on which the goods arrive, and to receive the unloaded pallets 58. The system may be operated manually or automatically.
