[Also in Division B4] An apparatus for withdrawing suspension rods 22 from cathode plates 20 which are advanced, one after another, by a conveyer 18 while suspended from the rods comprises a holding means 52 for gripping the plates while an extracting device is adapted to withdraw the rods. The extracting device includes tongs having a movable limb 102 and a fixed limb 104, the tongs being mounted on a carriage 98 which is movable by means of a ram 98, 100; the movable limb is actuated via a ram 108, 110. The cathode plates are moved by the conveyer 18 on to a forked support 40 which can be raised by a ram 50 and moved longitudinally by a ram 32, 34. The holding means includes jaw 52 movable inwardly by means of rams 72 in order to grip the plates 20, the jaws being pivotable through ninety degrees by means of chain- and-sprocket drive 76, 77 actuated by a motor 84 and raised and lowered by means of a ram 66, 68. In operation, when the forked support is full as shown in Fig. 2 it is moved by the ram 32, to bring the plates between the jaws which are then closed by the rams 72 to grip the edges of the plates. The extracting device is then operated so that the rods are withdrawn from the plates and deposited on to a ram-operated support 111, 114 within a magazine 94. The gripped plates are then rotated through ninety degrees and lowered on to a trolley 120. When the magazine is full of rods it is moved away on rails 90. The various rams of the apparatus may be pneumatically or hydraulically actuated.
