Abstract

1504008 Forging under vacuum UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CORP 16 July 1975 [17 July 1974] 29891/75 Heading B3H Apparatus for performing a forging operation on successive workpieces in a vacuum includes an elongated vacuum chamber 22, 38, a forging press within the chamber, at least one preheat chamber 56, 58, 60 mounted on the vacuum chamber and communicating with it, a loading chamber 54 mounted on the vacuum chamber and communicating with it, a closable gate (62), Fig. 3 (not shown), between the vacuum chamber and the loading chamber and a slide (70), Fig. 3, in the or each preheat chamber movable to position a workpiece on a manipulator longitudinally movable in the vacuum chamber. A workpiece (W), Fig. 3, is placed on a slide (66) in the loading chamber 54, which is then closed and evacuated by a vacuum pump independent of the main pump 136 for the chamber 38. When the pressure in the chambers 54, 38 has been equalized, the gate (62) is raised and the workpiece is moved into alignment with jaws 100, 102 of a workpiece clamp on a carriage 86. The jaws are provided with elements 114 which grip the workpiece and lift it clear of the carriage (66). This carriage is withdrawn, the slide (70) is advanced from the preheat chamber 56 and the workpiece is lowered on to it. The slider (70) is then withdrawn into the chamber 56 where the workpiece is heated. Meanwhile another workpiece is placed in the chamber 54 for transfer into the preheat chamber 58. By the time the preheat chamber 60 has been loaded, the first workpiece is at the required temperature and it is removed from the chamber 56 into alignment with the jaws 100, 102. These lift it from the slide (70) and the carriage 86 is advanced to place the workpiece between forging dies 10, 12 in the vacuum chamber 22. The die 10 is driven downwardly by an hydraulic mechanism 18 after the workpiece clamp has been withdrawn. The forged workpiece is secured by elements 116 of the jaws 100, 102, and the carriage 86 is retracted to place it on the slide (66), which in turn is retracted into the loading chamber 54. The chamber 54 may be loaded and unloaded by placing the workpiece on a hinged platform 142 which is pivotable into alignment with the slide (66). A heating coil (not shown) surrounds the dies 10, 12, and it is movable vertically to allow for insertion of the workpieces. The apparatus is provided with suitable inspection windows to allow for manual control of the various operations.
