Abstract
619,919. Extruding. MENSFORTH, E., WALKER, W. S., and STOKES, C. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36212. [Class 83 (iv)] An extrusion press includes a chamber aligned with or movable into alignment with, the container and ram, in which chamber a billet may be heated in an inert atmosphere to the temperature required for the extrusion process and a pusher arranged to push the heated billet from the chamber into the aligned container ready for the extrusion step. In one form, Fig. 1, a column slidably mounted in the bed 10 of the press carries a heating chamber 6 for a billet 3. The heating is effected by induction coils arranged at the sides of the billet and coupled mechanically to sliding sealing doors 9 so that the coils are moved away before the press ram 12 is operated to push the heated billet into the press container 11 and then to extrude it through the die 13. The movements of the coils and doors is effected by fluid pressure. In a modification, the upper part of the press includes a magazine from which billets are fed one by one to the heating chamber by means of an apertured slide. In another form, Fig. 5, the billets are carried by a vertical rotary carrier 30, being fed into the carrier at one station, then heated in an inert atmosphere as the carrier is rotated step-by-step and finally being extruded by the ram 12 when opposite the container 11 and die 13.
