Abstract
1372563 Making axle casings; forging EUMUCO AG FœR MASCHINENBAU and MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NDRNBERG AG 11 Oct 1971 [10 Oct 1970] 47312/71 Headings B3A and B3H A rear axle casing for a motor vehicle is made from a pair of casing halves 1, Fig. 14, welded together along a transverse zone 11 and each formed of a forged blank of varying longitudinal thickness. The starting billet has a aquare or round cross-section and after heating the billet is stretched by rolling to produce a preform billet (3), Fig. 2 (not shown), of varying section. The preform billet is forged in steps to a flat-blank 6, Fig. 9, formed with lateral bulges 7 which form the differential housing in the formed casing. The forged flat blank is then bent to the shape of the casing half, Fig. 12 (not shown). The forging steps are performed so that initially only the zones 4a of the billet are forged and in the last step forging is effected only in the zones of the bulges 7. The press for forging the preform billet comprises a lower die 9, Fig. 16, with a flat or contoured surface providing three forging stations 13, 14, 15. The billet is fed by an abutment (17), Fig. 20 (not shown), on a conveyer (16) to an aligning device 18 with an opposed pair of jaws 19. A fluid operated pusher (25), Fig. 20, (not shown), feeds the billet to the die station 13 against an adjustable end stop 32. The billet is positioned laterally by a strip 35 mounted on sliding rods 37 moved by piston-cylinder units. The strip also has parallel rods 41, 48 each provided with an adjustment screw (42), (47), Figs. 18 and 19 (not shown), which abuts a fixed stop (43) to allow the billet to be correctly positioned at the stations 14, 15. The flat blank produced is ejected from the press by being lifted by an arm (58), Fig. 21 (not shown) and pushed by a roller driven rod (62). In an alternative embodiment the upper die of the press is displaced stepwise and the blank remains stationary on the bottom die during the forging steps.
