Abstract

A process is described for making a polyvinyl acetate copolymer powder. Vinyl acetate is emulsion polymerized with monomer(s) containing an acid group such as crotonic acid, maleic anhydride, itaconic acid, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid by the usual methods for polymerizing vinyl acetate. If more than 10% of acid monomer is required in the polymer, the polymerization is preferably carried out in solution. The degree of polymerization is preferably higher than 1,000. Before drying the emulsion is mixed with an ammonium salt of a weak acid such as ammonium carbonate, acetate, oxalate, tartrate or benzoate, and an oxide and/or hydroxide of a polyvalent metal such as calcium or zinc. The mixture is then spray dried in a hot or warm stream of air. The powder can then be mixed with fillers and pigments which do not affect the alkalinity in the emulsion because the dispersability of the powder is critically dependent on the alkalinity. Titanium oxide, mica, kaolin or talc can be used. Plasticizers such as tricresyl and tributyl phosphate can be used. Other paint additives such as carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose and urea-formaldehyde prepolycondensate powder can be added. Examples are given showing how the process is carried out. Specification 753,173 is referred to.
