Abstract

Surfaces of glass and steel, including phosphated steel, are coated by applying thereto an aqueous composition comprising a partially neutralized copolymer of an unsaturated compound, the copolymer before neutralization containing at least 4% by weight of free carboxylic acid groups and at least 3% by weight of monomer units which contain beta-hydroxy-alkyl groups. Specified copolymers are those of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic and itaconic acids with comonomers such as styrenes, vinyl acetate, acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylamide methacrylamide and N-methyld derivatives thereof, acrylonitrile, butadiene and isoprene. The hydroxyalkyl groups may be introduced by copolymerization or by after-treatment with olefin oxides. Also present in the compositions may be water-soluble condensation products of formaldehyde with urea, melamine or phenol, polyepoxides, latices of addition polymers and pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide. After application the coatings are dried and may be cured by baking.
