Abstract

A coating composition for spraying or spreading on to, e.g glass or steel, comprises between 95 and 20% of an interpolymer containing between 3 and 15% by weight of an acrylamide in admixture with an aminoplast resin in an amount between 5 and 80% by weight in solution in an organic solvent containing a secondary or tertiary amine salt of an acidic film-hardening catalyst. Copolymers specified are methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/butyl acrylate/acrylamide, methyl methacrylate/2-ethyl-hexylacrylate/acrylamide and styrene/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid/acrylamide. The aminoplast resin is melamine/or urea/formaldehyde and may be methylated or butylated. Other ingredients specified are titanium dioxide, silica, polyester and polyether plasticizers. The compositions are baked to produce a matt or wrinkled finish.ALSO:A coating composition comprises between 95% and 20% of an interpolymer containing between 3% and 15% by weight of a copolymerized acrylamide in admixture with an aminoplast resin in an amount between 5% and 80% by weight and between 0,1% and 5% by weight of a secondary or tertiary amine salt of an acidic film-hardening catalyst. The Specification describes the preparation of methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/butyl acrylate/acrylamide, styrene/ethyl acrylate/acrylamide, methyl methacrylate/2-ethyl hexyl acrylate/acrylamide and styrene/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid/acrylamide copolymers. The aminoplast resin may be melamine/formaldehyde or urea/formaldehyde and may be methylated or butylated. Catalysts specified are triethylamine toluene-p-sulphonate diisopropylamine toluenep-sulphonate, triethylamine benzene sulphonate, triethylamine sulphate, triethylamine ammonium phosphate and a boron trifluoride/triethylamine complex. Other ingredients may be titanium dioxide, silica, polyester or polyether plasticizers to an amount between 1% and 10%. The composition is applied in a solvent and baked to harden.
