Abstract
Coating compositions for paper comprise aqueous dispersions having a pH below 7 and containing a copolymer formed from monomers consisting of at least 8% by weight of acrylic or methacrylic acid and, optionally, a mineral filler, e.g. clay, titanium dioxide, barium sulphate and zinc oxide. Also present in the compositions may be casein. The examples describe the preparation of dispersions of (a) ethyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and, optionally, either styrene or butyl methacrylate, and (b) butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and styrene. The copolymers are prepared by copolymerization of the monomers in an aqueous medium containing ammonium persulphate, tert.-butyl hydroperoxide, sodium metabisulphite, ferrous sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate, and having a pH of 3. Specifications 331,578 and 549,160 are referred to.ALSO:Paper is metallized, e.g. with aluminium, by precoating it with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer formed from monomers consisting of at least 8% by weight of acrylic or methacrylic acid, which dispersion may also contain a mineral filler, e.g. clay, drying the resulting coating and depositing thereon metal from the vapour phase. Prior to coating with the synthetic resin dispersion, the paper may have been coated with a mineral-pigmented casein and a butadiene-styrene latex. The examples describe the vapour phase deposition of aluminium upon papers precoated with copolymers of methacrylic acid and one or more comonomers selected from ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and methacrylate, and styrene. Specifications 331,578 and 549,160 are referred to.ALSO:Cellulosic webs, e.g. paper, are coated with an aqueous composition having a pH below 7 comprising water and at least 5%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a polymer formed by the polymerization of ethylenic monomers, at least 8% by weight of which consist of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and the resulting coating is then dried. The composition preferably contains a mineral pigment, e.g. clay, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The resulting coated webs are metallized by depositing thereon metal, e.g. aluminium, from the vapour phase. The examples describe coating paper with aqueous dispersions containing clay and copolymers of (a) butyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, (b) ethyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and, optionally, styrene, and (c) butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and styrene. The resulting coated papers are metallized with aluminium. In Example (9) the paper used is one pre-coated with a mineral-pigmented casein and a butadiene-styrene latex. Specifications 331,578 and 549,160 are referred to.
